In an automatic photoelectric telescope (APT), the photometric instrument with which measurements are made also undertakes the identification and centering of the stars to be observed. A microcomputer operates both the photometer and telescope, and in addition decides the time and order of observations. APTs are noted to excell in the detection of variable stars with properties, such as long periods, which could easily be missed during the shorter observation runs to which human astronomers are accustomed. A detailed account is given of an APT's typical operating cycle.
