A preliminary global model of the ionic composition of the atmosphere below 50 km is developed. The cosmic-ray ionization rate and recombination coefficient are defined, and the positive and negative ion schemes are outlined and illustrated with block diagrams. The primary reactions and the rate constants calculated for them are presented in tables. The model is found to predict a strong altitude effect on the positive ion abundances due to temperature and water-vapor concentration. In general, low concentrations of CH3CN and very little reconversion of nonproton (NPH) to proton hydrates (PH) are predicted, with PH dominant above 32 km and NPH dominant below that altitude. Negative ion populations should contain mainly HSO4(-) cores above 30 km and mainly NO3(-) cores below, suggesting strong anthropogenic influences on both regions. It is pointed out that these model predictions have been adjusted to give overall agreement with existing in situ observational data. Vertical profiles of predicted relative amounts are shown.
