The College Level One team of the National Institute for Science Education was charged with evaluating and disseminating effective approaches for college-level science education of non-majors. Among the products of this work are faculty-friendly resources at www.wcer.wisc.edu/nise/cl1. At the meeting of astronomy department leaders in Berkeley (August 2001) I discussed our findings in the context of "If I Had 45 Minutes with a New Professor ...". Since I have only 15 minutes at this session, I will summarize the central points of that talk, and discuss how they meld with the goals and strategies being recommended for Astro 101. The NISE was funded by the Division of Education and Human Resources of the National Science Foundation.
