JHKL photometry of CRL 3099, which has a thick carbon-rich dust shell, shows it to be a Mira variable (Delta-K = 2 mag, P = 495 days). The four known extreme carbon Miras all have periods (495-650 days) longer than typical (optically selected) carbon Miras. They suggest therefore that dense shells occur preferentially at longer periods (as in oxygen-rich Miras), and that these objects are not simply normal carbon Miras undergoing episodic mass ejection.
