Consideration is given to two techniques for the classification of sunspot groups near the solar limb, the visibility function, and the function of foreshortening in a sunspot group. The effect of the visibility function on estimates of the lifetimes of a sunspot group is studied in detail. Minnaert's diagram, a geometric representation of the effect of the visibility function was constructed to describe the asymmetry between east and west in the distribution of sunspot generating regions and regions of sunspot extinction under continuous observations. The principles used to construct Minnaert's diagram were also applied to a diagram of observation conditions for sunspot groups. Optimum observing times and regions near the solar limb are obtained.
