Experimental results have been obtained on the accuracy of visibility measurements of a long baseline Michelson stellar interferometer, operating in the near infrared (at 2.2 microns) under diffraction limited conditions at the C.E.R.G.A. Observatory. The point source transfer function, sampled in the 10-40 m range of baseline length over several nights, proves to be independent of atmospheric turbulence. It is now possible to assign very precise and reliable angular sizes to giant stars cooler than K0, taking advantage of the total bandwidth in the K atmospheric window. Angular size measurements of the infrared standard beta Andromedae are discussed, and multiple determinations (obtained in several nights near the first null of the visibility function) prove to be stable to 2 percent, giving a uniform disk diameter of 13.80 plus or minus 0.15 milliarcsec. Limiting magnitudes and resolution of the operating equipment are reported for a short term program on 40 stars cooler than K0, expected to be measured with uncertainties better than 2 percent.
