High resolution observations of H-beta, H-alpha, P-delta, Ca II, Ti I, Fe I, and K I emission and absorption lines of the bright Mira star S Car are reported. Throughout the whole luminosity period, the H-alpha profiles are strikingly variable. Ti I inverse P Cygni profiles are observed after luminosity minimum and interpreted as indicating important ballistic motions within the atmosphere of S Car. Double absorptions by K I, Fe I, and Ti I are demonstrated not to be real double lines as previously assumed in the literature and their classical interpretation is thus completely revised. The Ca II inverse P Cygni profiles are also only apparent and are the consequence, like the double lines, of ballistic motions near to the photosphere. A qualitative interpretation of all these observations in the framework of the single spherical shock theory developed for Omicron Ceti is given. In S Car, the shock front velocity varies with phase and is relatively high at luminosity maximum (approximately 90 km/s). During a luminosity period, the shock runs over only half the stellar radius and thus does not leave the dense atmosphere.
