First IRAS results on normal galaxies are reviewed. Results include maps of M31 and a discussion of the IR properties of an optically selected and an infrared selected sample of galaxies. Late type spirals are most readily detected, whereas normal ellipticals are not seen at all in the far infrared. The ratio of far infrared (80 micron) to visual (B filter) luminosity ranges from 0.04 to 50, the large range reflecting both a variety of current star formation activity and a variety of dust optical depths. The galaxies with extremely high L(80)/L(B) are only a small fraction of all galaxies. Interactions between galaxies may be stimulating star burst activity. Lists of IRAS circular objects identified with galaxies are given.
