Improved positive-ion composition measurements in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere using an improved aircraft-borne mass spectrometer with higher mass resolution and sensitivity than hitherto achieved are reported. The results are presented and discussed. It is concluded that primary ions formed by cosmic ray ionization of air are quickly converted to H(+)H2O 'core' ions that are strongly hydrated. Reactions of these cores with the large proton-affinity trace gases acetonitrile and acetone lead to corresponding H(+)CH3CN and H(+)(CH3)2CO cores. At lower heights NH3 vapor becomes abundant enough to convert most of the latter cores into H(+)NH3. Above the tropospause, acetone has such low abundance in the middle stratosphere that H(+)CH3CN conversion becomes inefficient. At even higher altitudes, the acetonitrile abundance becomes low enough to prevent efficient transformation of H(+)H2O cores.
