The observational histories and probable present status of 18 comets from the list of Marsden (1982) with periods 200 yr or less which have been observed once and which did not return as predicted are summarized. It is found that most of the lost comets were discovered under unusually advantageous conditions, that many may have orbits perturbed by encounters with Jupiter (resulting in lower brightness and larger perihelion distances), and that only six have characteristics which are favorable to an ephemeris-aided search. The possibility that such comets might be rediscovered accidentally by visual observations is evaluated.
