This is one of the review papers celebrating the centenary of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, see also 004.043. The first hundred years of our studies of spectroscopic binary stars are reviewed with special emphasis on those aspects of them reflected in the pages of the first hundred volumes of these Publications. Particular emphasis is laid on Joy's famous observation of emission lines in the spectrum of RW Tau and on the investigations stimulated by his paper. Some attempts are made to identify the present growing points in this branch of astronomy and thus to assess what problems may be of interest during the second century of this work.
