There are currently 1848 lunar place names. The lunar name bank contains 221 more for future use. The number of named craters has reached 1525. However, the surface density of named craters is not uniform; roughly 31.5 percent of the lunar surface consists of regions with no named craters. It seems useful to bring the surface density of named craters gradually to a minimum of roughly one object per 30,000 sq km, which will require introduction of 395 new names.
