Charge-coupled device observations of the galactic center at a wavelength of about 1 micron are presented. The bright discrete sources seen at longer wavelengths are detectable, and their general morphology is confirmed. Conventional astrometric techniques are used to show that the source IRS 16 Center lies within 0.3 arcsec + or - 0.5 arcsec of the nonthermal radio source usually identified with the galactic center. The position, color, and absence of emission lines of IRS 16 Center indicate that it is unique in the galactic center. The total luminosity of the object is estimated at eight million solar luminosities, a very significant portion of the total galactic center luminosity of 10-30 million solar luminosities.
