The 18 year long record of K coronameter data from the Mauna Loa, Hawaii instruments is used to determine the variation of the monthly averages of the integrated polarized brightness of the electron corona. This same data set is used to estimate the variation of coronal hole area as a function of the solar activity cycle. The following results are obtained: (1) the monthly averages of the integrated polarized brightness of the K corona vary linearly with the monthly averages of the Wolf sunspot number. (2) The amplitudes of monthly averaged polarized integrated brightness shows variation of an inferred coronal mass of a factor of 2 between the maximum and minimum of the activity cycle. (3) The ratio of total coronal hole area to the total disk area varies from near zero at solar maximum to a maximum value of about 0.25 at solar minimum. A simple model is used to demonstrate that the modulation of integrated polarized brightness cannot be accounted for solely by the growth and decay of coronal holes.
