An area 2.85 x 2.85 = 8.12 sq deg around the jet galaxy NGC 1097 has been completely searched for quasars. Two objective prism plates taken with the UK Schmidt telescope yielded 43 candidates reaching as faint as V(5000) = 20.5 mag. Thirty-three of these candidates have been examined with aperture spectrophotometry. The result is that one star was found, and one narrow-line emission object and 31 quasars were identified. The candidate list appears to be about 94 percent true quasars. At the edges of this field the quasar density is equal to the normally expected background density, but it increases strongly toward NGC 1097. The quasar density reaches its greatest enhancement in a small region centered between the two strongest jets, which emerge on the northern side of NGC 1097. The excess density of quasars in this region reaches a factor of 20 or greater for the brighter quasars. The azimuthal distribution of the quasars in the field shows a tendency for them to be found in a direction which is coincident with the direction of the jets from NGC 1097. The X-ray emission near the nucleus and the overall radio emission are also strongest on the side of NGC 1097 toward the strongest jets.
