History: Australian Amateur Astronomy
Scientific paper
After earlier abortive attempts to form national astronomical groups or societies in Australia during the 1870s and 1880s, local groups were established in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney during the 1890s. The Sydney and Melbourne groups, founded in 1895 and 1897, respectively, were branches of the British Astronomical Association. The Sydney-based New South Wales Branch was the brainchild of two of Australia's leading amateurs, Walter Gale and R. T. A. Innes, but they were careful to gain the support of the country's foremost astronomer, John Tebbutt, who became the Branch's founding President. During its first five years of existence, the Branch witnessed rapid and impressive growth. Observing sections were formed, monthly meetings held, a library established, a monthly newsletter circulated and many research papers emanating from the Branch graced the pages of the parent society's Journal. The sound guidance and sterling work performed by members of the early Councils placed the Branch's future on a firm footing, and it is with a certain degree of pride that the New South Wales Branch can today look back on nearly a century of achievement, as one of Australia's oldest and most important astronomical groups.
