Low-resolution (29 A/mm) observations obtained at 4530-5072 A with a Boller and Chivens spectrograph and image-dissector scanner at the Cassegrain focus of the 1.52-m telescope at ESO and high-resolution (2 A/mm) observations obtained at 6534-6591 A with the coude echelle spectrograph at the 1.5-m coude auxiliary telescope at ESO are reported for the ring planetary nebula IC 418. The data are presented in line profiles, tables, and isophote maps and characterized. A symmetrical Gaussian shape is found for the H-alpha profiles, but the profiles for the 6584-A forbidden line of N II exhibit separate components corresponding to an expansion velocity of 23 km/sec. These profiles are parameterized and used to construct a simple three-dimensional model of IC 418.
