Certain evidence indicates that galaxies are generally concentrated in large structures separated by voids of similar magnitude. The structures, or 'superclusters', have dimensions ranging from several tens to several hundreds Mpc. On the basis of an observation of the nearest superclusters, it is inferred that these entities have intricate internal structures. The substructures in the Local Supercluster have apparent widths of 3-4 Mpc. The present investigation is mainly concerned with the time of existence of the superclusters. The considerations discussed are based on the working hypothesis that superclustering of the type observed in the environment of the Galaxy has existed since at least z = 3. Attention is given to the Lyman alpha absorption lines in quasars, the evolution of quasars and the ionization of the intergalactic gas, and the expected properties of protosuperclusters.
