The origins of the earth's prebiotic carbon and of the biosphere are considered together with carbon transformation processes in the earth's mantle, the role of carbon in ore formation and in the abiogenic synthesis of naphthoids, and the possibility of a genetic relation between prebiotic carbon and carbonaceous chondrites and intergalactic dust. It is suggested that the ability of chlorophyll-like molecules to absorb solar energy and to convert it into chemical energy developed and became of geological significance before the origin of the biosphere. It is shown that there exist in the earth's mantle, along with the isotopically undifferentiated carbon, some quantities of isotopically heterogeneous carbon; the existence of the latter is thought to be related to the evolution of mantle fluids.
