A semiempirical model is developed for calculating ion and electron densities at corrected geomagnetic latitudes above 50 deg for altitudes ranging from 90 to 200 km. The input parameters of the model are the coordinates, date, and time and indices of solar and geomagnetic activity; the model takes into account ionization via direct and scattered solar UV radiation and via precipitating protons and electrons. The ion and electron densities are calculated using stationary continuity equations for five ion species with allowance for the effect of ionospheric field-aligned currents. Calculation results on the large-scale distribution of electron density in the E-region agree well with experimental data.
