A catalog of 72 southern hemisphere Mira variables has been compiled, which tabulates spectral types, Balmer emission-line ratios, and eye-estimated absorption-line intensities. It is shown from these data that the irregular behavior of absorption features in Mira variables can be explained by a second shock front higher in the atmosphere than the one producing hydrogen emission. Strong emission is associated with weak-line cycles, when overlying TiO absorption is less pronounced, suggesting that the velocity gradient may be responsible for line weakening.
