The authors report UBVRI photoelectric observations of stars in the fields of five open clusters with carbon stars in or very near the cluster area. In three cases they find that the carbon stars, treated as members of the clusters, receive absolute visual and bolometric magnitudes within the range normally accepted for this class. In the case of the other two clusters the carbon stars are found to be non-members, and at greater distances.
