Image processing systems for treating the spherically aberrated HST image data are reviewed with specific mention given to inverse filtering and the method by Lucy (1974). The original images are point-spread-function (PSF) images, and consideration is given to the suitability of Lucy's method and the maximum entropy approach for the PSF-type data. Although the techniques mentioned do not address the issue of a space-variant PSF, they are useful for data treatment prior to restoration including background subtraction and apodization of the PSF.
