The observational history of globular clusters is presented with attention to the work of Messier, Herschel, Shapley and Baade. The recent developments in connection with X-ray stars, black holes and the metal-poor globular cluster centers around 47 Tucanae are reviewed. Models for the formation of the 47 Tucanae galaxy are proposed in accordance with new spectroscopic information pertaining to the cluster's metallicity.
