The luminescence optical excitation spectrum of Luna 24 sample 24125 is investigated. Monochromatized light from a 450-W xenon lamp was used to irradiate a 5-mg sample of the lunar material, and luminescence was measured with a photomultiplier tube. Observations of the 4E(4D), 4T2(4D) and 4E, 4A1(4G) bands of Fe(+3) in the plagioclase indicate the presence of well-dispersed Fe(+3) ions at concentrations such that the ligand bands are observed, most likely in atomic concentrations less than several hundred per million. It is suggested that the comparison of the present results with those obtained for samples from the same core but at different depths and from interior rocks shielded from environmental influences would be useful.
