A simple model is described which gives a natural explanation of the major physical differences between the two main classes of extragalactic radio sources. The model also accounts for the observed ratio of radio-quiet to radio quasars. If this model is correct the dominant radio emission from about half the detected extragalactic objects is highly anisotropic.
