The spiral arm S4 in the galaxy M31 is outlined by Cepheids of all periods just as well as by groups of blue stars. The longer-period Cepheids are concentrated toward the inner edge of the arm. The appreciable stellar age gradient across the arm and several other manifestations of a spiral density wave are attributable to the large (25 deg) pitch angle in this part of the arm, a circumstance that may also have split it into three subarms. The period (age) gradient of the Cepheids across the arm implies an angular rotational velocity of 10 km/sec kpc for the spiral pattern. In our Galaxy, no well-defined spiral arm analogous to S4 exists in the solar neighborhood, perhaps because the sun is close to the corotation radius.
