Pulse height data of recently acquired X-ray images of the Cygnus Loop (0.15-1.12 keV) and Puppis A (0.15-1.5 keV) supernova remnants are used to study spectral variations with position over these sources. It is shown that a systematic change in X-ray spectral hardness exists over the Cygnus Loop which can be described in terms of an effective temperature range of 3-8 x 10 to the 6th K using a simple thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with interstellar absorption. Attention is given to a spectral hardness map of the Puppis A supernova remnant which reveals the origin of the two temperature models proposed by Zarnicki et al. (1978) and also suggests that a multi-temperature spectrum will be required to give a full description of the X-ray emission. Finally, it is concluded that the X-ray spectra of these sources cannot be treated as a whole and that high spectral resolution will be needed before a full understanding of their X-ray emission can be gained.
