Postdepositional diagenetic effects on primary isotopic compositions of a variety of limestones and dolomites from Vendian and late Riphean sedimentary successions worldwide are evaluated. A new delta C-13 curve for 850-500 Ma marine carbonates is constructed. Delta C-13 values are high during most of the late Riphean with brief negative excursions likely associated with glacial periods. Similarly in the Vendian delta C-13 falls sharply around the Varanger glaciation and then returns to high values remaining until the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary. A simple model is constructed to explain the geochemical relationships and the implications of the relationships for changes in global geochemical cycles are explored. It is concluded that a significant and rapid increase in atmospheric O2 occurred in the Vendian. These findings have important implications for environmental changes during the first appearance of Ediacaran metazoan fauna.
