A computer program was written to produce plots of latitude and longitude values as seen by an all-sky TV camera for different heights above the Earth. The transformations in these calculations were used to construct models of the variation of apparent width of arcs of different heights and thicknesses in different positions across the sky, assuming the model arcs to be East-West aligned. Measurements were then made from the TV screen of the variation of apparent width of real arcs which moved along the magnetic N-S meridian, and the results compared with the theory. The usefulness of the all-sky data became very clear, for by measuring the way that the apparent width changes with position, conclusions can be made about the height and thickness of arcs.
