A description is given of an experiment to measure mesospheric
temperatures using laser observations of resonance scatter from sodium
atoms. A tunable narrow band laser is used to measure the profile of the
sodium D2 line and temperatures are deduced from the theoretical curves
providing the best fit to the data.
