A spectrum along the jet of M87 has been obtained in effective seeing with the Canadian-France-Hawaii Telescope. Near 5175 A (Mg I b), the spectrum of the nucleus shows both emission and stellar absorption lines. However, when the spectrum of the underlying core of M87 is subtracted, the stellar absorption lines disappear, leaving a blue continuum and the broad emission line forbidden N I 5199 A. At visual wavelengths, the nucleus is essentially completely nonthermal; it is not a cluster of stars. This confirms results of Dressler and Richstone (1990).
