The full set of premaximum observations is presented of the unusual type Ia SN 1991T, which is at least one magnitude brighter at maximum than other SN Ias in Virgo. The method used to generate synthetic spectra is described and applied to reproduce the observations, and the results of the spectral analysis are discussed in the context of different models of deflagration, detonation, and delayed detonation of white dwarfs. It is concluded that SN 1991T seems to correspond to a delayed detonation in a white dwarf that failed to produce intermediate-mass elements in the outermost layers and did not impart much kinetic energy to them.
