The basic acceleration mechanisms acting on the ionized gas in the narrow line region (NLR) of Seyfert galaxies are examined to establish whether the forbidden O III 5007 line widths are determined by the 'active' processes unique or by 'passive' processes such as motion in the gravitational potential of the host galaxy. It is argued that the jet which powers the radio source also accelerates ionized gas, creating a super-virial bipolar flow. If the high-velocity jet-perturbed contributions are deblended, the residual profiles rejoin the rest of the sample close to the virial relation. Galaxy and spheroidal luminosity is considered as alternative virial parameters. The possibility that Seyfert galaxies are overluminous is investigated using the Tully-Fisher relation. The hypothesis that both the spheroidal mass plays an important role in defining not only NLR kinematics but also NLR luminosities, both radio and emission line, is confirmed.
