The physics of emission from the powerful continuum sources within active galactic nuclei can be characterized by the parameter L/R, a measure of compactness. For values of L/R exceeding some 10 to the 30th ergs/s cm energy losses by relativistic electrons are so rapid that they must come into general balance with simultaneous processes of energy gain. This tendency toward energy balance allows a largely model-independent discussion of the emissions over the whole range from infrared to gamma rays. Assumed smooth radial variations of coherent electromagnetic fields then lead to natural fits of power and spectral parameters conforming to the observed patterns.
