Results of ten years (since 1979) of photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert galaxy Fairall 9 show that the strength of both the continuum and the broad emission lines varied in a very regular and gradual way. In the continuum, the brightness of Fairall 9 continually decreased from 1979 till the end of 1984, and from 1988 till the end of 1989, with a phase of brightening between 1984 and 1987 interrupting this general dimming. Using UV continuum and line data available in the literature, it is shown that the continuum, from optical to UV wavelengths, varied simultaneously, while both the UV and spectral indices remained constant over the time interval 1979-1989. At the same time, the ratio of UV to optical flux varied drastically. While the behavior of the broad emission lines was similar to that of the continuum, it was found that the variations lagged behind the continuum by an amount depending on the type of the line considered.
