The Herzberg I, Chamberlain, and Herzberg II O2 emission systems that emit in the UV are studied to characterize the excitation mechanisms for each state. A photochemical scheme is proposed that is compatible with theory and other molecular oxygen emissions and can describe the emission profiles and relative emission intensities. The present study reproduces the altitude-integrated vibrational distributions of the O2 emission systems that occur in nightglow.
