The existing and prospective methods for creating artificial formations in the circumterrestrial medium are reviewed. The discussion covers the detonation of chemical high explosives, injection of plasma-forming and plasma-extinguishing agents, electrical sources of plasmas and charge particle beams, sources of ultraviolet emission, electron guns, high-potential RF emission, and artificial meteors. Results of experimental studies that have been accomplished to date are summarized.
