The investigation of halos surrounding X-ray sources behind sufficiently dense dust columns provides an opportunity to separate the absorption and scattering components of interstellar extinction. The Rosat telescope, with the PSPC (Position Sensitive Proportional Counter), due to its very small mirror scattering and low background, is able to directly image dust scattering halos and determine the dust properties along the line of sight. X-ray scattering in dust particles and interstellar extinction are addressed and the gas to dust correlation is shown.
