The relativistic jets observed in quasars and BL Lac objects are nothing else than magnetically collimated disk winds. On the parsec scale, the radius of these outflows is of the order of a few light cylinder radii for magnetic surfaces anchored near the inner edge of the accretion disk. The disk plasma is accelerated to Lorentz factors of approximately or equal to 10, depending on the magnetization of the disk. Relativistic motion of knots and variability in the emission from blazars are related to nonaxisymmetric bubbles carried along by the plasma in relativistic magnetized jets. The intense gamma radiation detected by GRO (Gamma Ray Observatory) in the direction of flat spectrum quasars and BL Lac objects is naturally explained in terms of inverse Compton emission from young knots ejected along the jet channel.
