Detailed studies of the X-ray spectra of well known Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from different object classes are reported. It was found that there are no indications in the spectra of BL Lac objects of low energy absorption due to cold and dense material in their X-ray emitting regions. On the other hand, absorption line features were found below 1 keV indicating the probable existence of highly ionized matter in these objects. The convex (0.1 to 20) keV spectrum of MKN 421 is presented, which was obtained by combining the data simultaneously measured with Rosat and Ginga in a single fit. As examples for X-ray spectra of bright AGN, those of archetypal Quasi Stellar Objects (QSOs) are presented, the radio loud quasar 3C 273 and the radio quiet QSO 1821 + 64, respectively, both of which exhibit variable soft X-ray excesses.
