The complex annular topography, the presence of shatter cones and breccias with quartz showing multiple sets of planar structures, indicative of shock metamorphism, indicate a meteoritic impact origin for the circular depression of Aorounga (Chad, Africa). The age of the impact, based on the good conservation of the crater and the presence of a poorly developed hydrographic network, may be about -12,000 to -3,500 B.P.
