Model calculations of the parameter expressing the degree of development of the F1-layer are compared with observations of the frequency of appearance of a pronounced layer over the Antarctic. This comparison shows good agreement between the average pattern of the spatial distribution of the character of diurnal variations of the thermosphere parameters described by the MSIS-86 model and the behavior of the ionosphere.
