Laser diodes may bring significant improvements to the performance of Cs and Rb frequency standards, as well as new possibilities for their miniaturization. However, the requirements on the laser are stringent, particularly as far as frequency noise are concerned. The requirements are viewed and compared with measurements of several types of single mode lasers including Fabry-Perot CSP, quantum well and distributed Bragg reflector structures.
