Scientific paper

The paper discusses the concept and application of mean galactic extinction law. The existing 'mean curves' are usually averaged over limited samples of (nearby) objects. A new method of averaging the curve by the Galaxy itself (i.e., derived from the photometric and spectrophotometric data of very distant stars) is proposed. Such a curve may be compared to those observed in other galaxies or used for dereddening very distant stars. The analytical fit facilitates calculations of the extinction at any wavelength.
