Spectroscopic observations are described of 42 galaxies that were suspected to be active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the basis of their detection by the objective prism survey of Wamsteker et al. (1985). The presence of emission lines was confirmed in nearly all objects, and line fluxes and other spectral properties have been measured. Six new Seyfert galaxies were discovered, while most of the other objects were found to be starburst galaxies, some with very strong emission lines. At least four of the Seyferts have a broad-line component. The most interesting of these is object 7, for two reasons: (1) the broad lines are very strong compared with the narrow lines, something that is normally only observed in much more luminous Seyfert nuclei; and (2) the galaxy in which this nucleus is embedded seems to be remarkably faint.
