Results are presented of observations of the infrared source GL-490, made by the NIR speckle interferometer at the Calar Alto (Spain) telescope during September 1986, September 1989, and September 1990. The GL-490 was resolved into an unresolved core (FWHM less than 0.1 arcsec) and a halo (FWHM about 1.2 arcsec) which is bluer than the core. The geometry and the colors of the core-halo system suggest that the illuminating star is located at the core, ruling out the interpretation by previous authors that GL 490 is simply a reflection lobe. Speckle interferometric polarimetry shows that the halo has a different polarization than the core, and evidence was obtained that the polarization of the halo is largely caused by scattering. Results of optical imaging polarimetry, carried out at the prime focus of the Calar Alto telescope in October 1988, showed the presence of foreground polarization and suggested the presence of a second polarizing process.
