We report the results of a search for new pre-main sequence candidates in the Chamaeleon II dark cloud based on three IRAS catalogs (the Point Source Catalog, the Serendipitous Survey Catalog and the Faint Source Survey). A total of 30 sources were selected. Twelve of these display IRAS colors typical of young stellar objects, of which eight are probable T Tauri stars, while the other four appear to be in an earlier, embedded phase without optically visible counterpart. We examined the distribution of the newly born stars with respect to the cloud itself. A clear tendency is apparent for star formation to have occurred in the north-eastern side of Chamaeleon II where the column densities are highest. The embedded and presumably youngest objects are located in distinct clumps in the northern part of the cloud. Star formation is more widespread in Chamaeleon II than in the well-studied Chamaeleon I cloud.
