Highly structured Langmuir wave packets with low-frequency modulations have been observed in the interplanetary medium and planetary foreshocks. In order to interpret these observations, a coherent nonlinear analysis of three-wave processes is performed for both electrostatic and electromagnetic Langmuir decay processes. The Manley-Rowe relations that relate energy levels of the interacting waves are derived, which show that the ion-acoustic wave energy is much less than the Langmuir wave energy. Analytical expressions describing the nonlinearly modulated Langmuir wave packets are obtained. The nonlinear modulation period is shown to be a function of the wave amplitude.
