Prolate functions are the optimal apodizers for rectangular and circular apertures in stellar coronagraphy. With Roddier's phase mask technique, prolate apodizations can produce a total extinction of the star light. For Lyot's coronagraphy, the extinction, not complete, is surprisingly good for a reasonable mask size. These properties are in principle valid for a monochromatic point source. However a simple device allows to achromatise the system.
